My Reflections: Week of June 4, 2012 (Week 1) : Our first week was all very confusing. We walked into class and met Ms. Salsedo and she introduced us to Destination College and Service Learning. Destination College and Service Learning was new to the class, but luckily I knew exactly what to do! I went to the CGCC library and the downtown library and checked out books that involved U.S. history, world history, and issues in America and the world. I picked out and read two books that I would read the first day. This week I got to work on my Weebly website, as well. Our first day to work with the kids was Wednesday, June 6, 2012. We had a total of four sessions of kids we will read and work with, and each session is thirty minutes long. The first book I picked for the first session was “The Great Kapok Tree by Lynne Cherry”. The issue I tied in to the book was nature and how it can be mistreated, the students understood that well. On Wednesday, I did the self-assessment with the kids to get to know their likes and dislikes. On Thursday, we were able to read our books to the kids, give them vocabulary words, and a little quiz about the book. The vocabulary I found in the book and showed them were; streaming, howling, ancestors, depend, and troupe. The kids understood and comprehended the vocabulary very well. The first week was confusing and yet fun! Week of June 11, 2012 (Week 2) : The second week, in class we worked on weebly accounts/ portfolios. While working on our accounts we learned what should go into our accounts and what Ms. Salsedo wants in our website and what she's looking for. We also went through what Ms. Salsedo wants us to go over with our students for the next couple of days and weeks. On Tuesday June 12, I read "Let's talk about race" by Julius Lester. The book might have been a little hard for the students to understand. I had to explain to them more than once what the book meant, but they later understood and liked it. Later in the week we went to class and learned what connotation, denotation, and inference and it all these can be and are used. On June 14, we met with our kids again and i read "Tornadoes!" by Gail Gibbons. The book itself is full of information about tornadoes and the effects it brings when tornadoes hit. I believe the students liked it. I chose to read "Tornadoes!" because the issue i picked was Natural Disasters, and how it affects us and nature in general. i read "Tornadoes!" by Gail Gibbons. I chose to read "Tornadoes!" because the issue i picked was Natural Disasters, and how it affects us and nature in general. While reading about tornadoes I was able to tie in different competencies and lessons we learned in class while reading to the students. While reading the book I used denotation to allow the students look at the pictures of the book and give me their opinion of what was going on and inferring the classification of the tornado. While reading the students were able to identify the author’s purpose; informing us the readers about tornadoes. The students learned a lot about tornadoes and the book and so did I. GROUP REFLECTION: Lisa read "Magic School Bus Inside the Earth" by Joanna Cole. Her and her students talked about the different layers of the earth and the different rocks presented in the earth's core and crest. Her final issue was the lack of earth supply. Eric read the "Gershon's Monster" by Eric Kimmel. The book had a lesson; when you do something good, you get in return. The issue he got from the book was cutural beliefs. Week of June 18, 2012 (Week 3) : The third week, we worked in class and went over compentencies and lessons we should be going over with our students when we are reading to them. On June 19, 2012 I read "Water Everywhere" by Jill Atkins. From reading the book i chose to tie in the issue of lack of water supply. While reading the book the students understood most of what the book was talking about, at times they would jump and ask a question or add a comment. It was obvious they had learned about water and its aspects recently. They seemed to enjoy the book alot! On Wednesday, we met in class to work on our Weebly accounts. While working on our accounts we also had to type our mentee's interview and post it to blackboard as well as our weebly accounts. On Wednesday, we also took a short trip to the library. In the library we watched videos about databases and searcg engines and how they can sometimes be inaccurate. We also learned about CRAP...C-Content R-Recnecy A-Author and P-Purpose. On Thursday, i read "Energy Makes Things Happen" by Kimberly Bradley. It was our last day with the kids from Destination college. They enjoyed the book and it was also interesting! It was overall a good last session! It was great reading and interacting with the kids over the oast 4 weeks :) Week of June 25, 2012 (Week 4) : The fourth week and final week!!! On Monday, we met in the classroom to talk about our final project...our Weebly accounts and presentation. We basically talked about our presentation and what is expected in our final presentation. On Tuesday, we met in the classroom at about 10:30am and we just put our finishing touches on our Weebly accounts and our final presentations. My Weebly is completely done now and its looks great. My final project is also done and also looks great as well! On Wednesday, we met in the class room at the usual time (9:20am) and listened and watched my other classmates present their final project and talk about their stories and how the past 4 weeks went for them! I learned alot in CRE 101. It was a great experience!! Thank you.
