Response: June 7, 2012: On June 7, we read The Great Kapok Tree. I had 8 students. While reading the book I would pass it around so each student read a few pages, so I made sure the students were paying attention and understood the book and the connection to the issue. The Great Kapok Tree by Lynne Cherry is a book about 2 men entering the Rain Forest and one man is assigned to cut down the tree. The man falls asleep and about every animal and a little boy asks the man to not cut down the tree. In the end the man does not cut down the tree. I tied this book into the issue of cutting down trees and cutting down Mother Nature. Trees and Nature is being treated wrong all around us...thats the issue i tied into their lesson. The students seem to like the book and they understood the issue well.
June 12, 2012: On June 12, i read "Let's talk about race". Once again i had 8 students. While reading the book i noticed the students were a little confused as to what to what the book was about and how to relalte to it. In my opinion the book was a great book. It talked about how everyone is the same and no matter where a person is from or the skin of their we are all people and everyone is equal. The meaning behind the book was complex, but i enjoyed reading it. The students enjoyed it too, so they said. With a little explaination, they seemed to understand the issue!
June 14, 2012: On June 14, i read "Tornadoes!". This week i had 8 students again! We read the book and while reading i would read a couple of pages and pass the book along to the students so they can also read the book as well. The book itself was on no more than tornadoes. It talked about different classifications of a tornadoe and how much damage each level brings. The students were really interested and so was i. While reading to the students i was able tro tie in denotation due to the pictures and the students understood the author's purpose which was to inform us readers about tornadoes! We all learned something new about tornadoes and gained new knowledge!
June 19, 2012: On June 19, i read "Water Everywhere" by Jill Atkins. The book was written to inform the reader, the students understood the author's purpose-informative. While we were reading the book they seemed to know alot about water and they would ask questions or make a comment about what was going on, on that page, which was great!!! "Water Everywhere" was a book about WATER! It talked about how water is crucial to our everday life. It went through talking about the water process and what each step consisted of. It talked about how water is used for many things, animals and people! Throughout the book it gave us facts about water and very descriptive pictures. With the pictures i used denotation to explain and have the students infer what was going on and explain. The students seem to like the book alot and found it interesting and so did i!! Today was a great session!!!!
June 21, 2012: On June 21, i read "Energy Makes Things Happen" by Kimberly Bradley. The book was about energy, how we use it on a daily, and everything has energy. The book talked about how everything has energy! It was an interesting book and very informative!! The students would ask me questions regarding energy and the book itself. I would pass the book around so every student would be able to read it and understand the content, which they did. At the end of the session a couple of students mentioned they liked the book. I happened to like the book as well, it pointed out information i have never crossed upon, it was overall a good book! Since it was our last session, it was kind of sad! But i had fun with the kids!
